Chris was born in North Yorkshire and played classical violin at school on Tyneside. She discovered traditional music while studying at Bangor University playing fiddle and concertina. Chris moved to Dunoon, Scotland and formed the ceilidh band Canned Haggis and introduced the clarsach (Scottish harp) to her repertoire. After a brief spell in Birmingham playing with Dark Island, she returned to Scotland and joined Pigtown Fling.
