Robert crawled out of the Florida swamps back in 1855 after tiring of wrestling alligators… eh… that’s not true. Let’s start again. Robert was first spotted playing mandolin while crushing grapes in the Loire Valley… no no NO… one more time… Robert Woods is a left handed instrumentalist, focussing on stringed instruments. Primarily a guitarist Robert also plays mandolin and banjo but will give anything a go including upside down bass. First starting out as a rock guitarist he played in bands based in Glasgow. While doing some side work for a ceilidh band he found all their tunes got stuck in his head. Next thing you know, instead of being the next Jimi Hendrix or Jimmy Page, he’s at the traditional sessions playing a mixture of finger picked and flat picked Celtic tunes. Bluegrass, Old Time and European music soon started to find their way into his repertoire and a mixture of these styles has led to a distinctive sound which can be heard in his arrangements and compositions.
